No More Stretchy Pants!

Ready to fight the lingering Thanksgiving Day bulge?! Join me in a 3 day “Refresh” challenge group when we return from our long weekend. This 3 day program is designed to reduce cravings and bloat, cleanse your body, connect with your body (one of my most favorite parts), AND lose a few inches while setting yourself up for a few weeks of success before the fun begins again!

A few of the questions you may have:
1) What are the benefits of being in an online challenge group?
· You have the support of your peers and those who are facing the same challenges you are.
· I will be there with you 100% guiding and coaching you through each of the days, you will not be alone on this journey.

2) Is this similar to a juice cleanse?
· It is not similar to a juice cleanse. This program allows you to eat healthy fats, fruits, vegetables along with your shakes for breakfast and lunch. As a health coach, I am personally not a fan of juice cleanses and believe this is a much better approach to “cleansing” our bodies.

3) As a certified health coach, is this something that you have tried before and what has been your experience?
· I have! Please visit my online videos from Day 1, 2 and 3, for more details.
Day 1
Day 2
Day 3

4) How much does it cost?
· The cost is $69.95 and you can find all the details and what’s included here.

My goal for this challenge is to set you up for success and allow you to recognize the needs of your body. These 3 days will be based on approximately 1500 calories a day and very limited to natural and basic foods. This is your time to commit to yourself for just 3 days to recognize and feel the difference when you feed your body nutritious foods. At the end of the 3 days, I will work with you to determine whether you want to continue in this journey with some support of if you are ready to conquer your health goals on your own. Either way it is completely up to you and I can provide guidance for both options.
*Side note – if you have been thinking of trying Shakeology, this is a great opportunity to do so. Your program is designed to have 1 Shakeology drink a day and it is included. 🙂
Any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Dietary Theories in a Nutshell

dietaryThere are over 100 dietary theories out there to complement each and every one of you; however, the most important part of any diet is to understand that no one diet will work for everyone. The food that I eat and that works for me may be considered another one’s poison and vice versa. You need to find what works for you. Whether it’s Paleo, Aruvedya, Atkins, Gluten Free, Blood Type, 90/10, etc, it needs to be unique to you and your body!

Being educated on these dietary theories has really helped in understanding what will work best for me and my lifestyle. It is a work in progress but the best thing about it is that I get to experiment with new foods and more importantly learn how to listen to my body. Listening to my bodies’ needs and responses has been a pivotal change in my life. Overloading myself with carbs/processed food/junk often times leaves me feeling bloated, sick and unhappy with my food choices. This may happen frequently with many of us and although it’s not an easy transition to incorporating better eating habits, it can be a very rewarding change.

The diet that seems to work for me and fits my schedule the majority of the time is the 90/10 diet, which means you eat clean 90% of the time and whatever you want the rest of the time, leaving room for those certain cravings you just can’t resist. Clean Eating means consuming whole, natural, unprocessed foods. Below are a few simple guidelines for Clean Eating success.
1. Eat small frequent meals 5-6 times per day to level blood sugar and prevent hunger
2. Include fruits, vegetables, lean protein, complex carbohydrates and heart healthy fats in your daily consumption
3. Avoid processed and/or refined foods (sugar, baked goods, candies, white flour, white rice, etc)
4. Avoid high saturated and trans fats
5. Avoid sodas, high calorie juices and other drinks that give your body no nutritional value and lots of unnecessary (unwanted) calories
6. Avoid high calorie, non nutritious foods (i.e. junk food)
7. Drink at least 8 cups of water per day

If eating this way is a new concept, it may take some practice and commitment to eating clean. For me, it has been a gradual process over the last few years and it is still a work in progress, however, the improvements such as weight loss, improved energy, and overall happiness and wellness has been life changing.

The best thing about it is that there are so many satisfying ways to make “clean” food taste good. Whether it’s using herbs, spices, or homemade marinades, there are ways to satisfy your taste buds. Even sweets…which I will make sure I blog about and provide you with some healthy sweet treat recipes, which I know can be a downfall for many of us, including myself!

Now, all this being said and as I mentioned earlier in this posting, this way of eating may not work for all of you and that’s ok but it’s a great place to start and figure out what works best for you specifically. If you are interested in any particular dietary theories, please email me at lacey.maiman@gmail.com and I will be happy to provide you with the details including pros and cons of the diet itself in a helpful way that is easy to understand.

Calorie Blasting Alternatives to the Traditional Spin Class…

spinSpinning is one of my absolute favorite workouts to do. There’s nothing better than zoning out, breaking a sweat, listening to high energy tunes and burning approximately 500-600 calories in an hour — walking away from the class feeling incredibly productive and on top of the world!

Beside from the traditional spin class, there are alternatives to a more total body workout…Aqua Spin AND what they call the RealRyder.

I had the opportunity to try out a RealRyder class in Hoboken this past weekend and had a blast! The RealRyder was designed to fully engage the entire body for a functional riding experience. Having a background in biomechanical engineering, this was truly an exciting workout for me. RealRyder has developed a new kind of stationary bike incorporating biomechanical advances including three planes of motion which allows you to turn, lean and balance just like the real thing. Not only are you using your leg muscles but you are working your arms, core and balancing techniques. This is such a huge advancement to the traditional bikes.

I have yet to try out the Aqua Spin but find it very interesting. I can image trying to peddle a bike under water could be incredibly difficult and calorie blasting. Next stop, Aqua Studio in NYC!
